It tracks 5 key metrics per ticker — retail percentage, institutional percentage, dark pool routing, retail sentiment, and average trade size — to surface which stocks have the highest retail participation and how much volume is being routed through dark pools.

Knowing who is on the other side of a trade matters. Stocks with heavy retail participation behave differently to those dominated by institutions — they tend to be more volatile, more susceptible to social media momentum, and more likely to see sharp reversals. Nydar's retail flow data helps you understand the landscape before you enter a position.

What Is Retail vs Institutional Flow?

Every stock has a mix of owners: individual retail traders placing orders through brokerages, and institutional investors like hedge funds, mutual funds, and pension funds moving large blocks. The ratio between these groups affects how a stock trades.

Retail Flow

Individual traders placing smaller orders through retail brokerages. Nydar identifies high retail participation, which often correlates with social media attention, meme stock dynamics, and higher intraday volatility. Retail-heavy stocks can move sharply on sentiment alone.

Institutional Flow

Hedge funds, mutual funds, and other large players executing through dark pools and block trades. Nydar tracks institutional-heavy stocks that tend to move on fundamentals, earnings, and sector rotation. Their large orders are often spread across time to minimise market impact.

Reading the Data

The Ownership Bar

Nydar's ownership bar for each stock shows a horizontal split between cyan (retail) and indigo (institutional). The wider the cyan portion, the more retail-dominated the stock is. A stock showing 70% retail and 30% institutional has significantly more individual trader activity than average.

Retail Sentiment

Nydar displays a sentiment label for each entry — Bullish (green), Bearish (red), or Neutral (grey). This reflects the aggregate positioning of retail traders. A stock with 65% retail ownership and bullish sentiment means individual traders are heavily long and optimistic. Bearish sentiment with high retail ownership can signal incoming selling pressure.

Dark Pool & Trade Size

When available, Nydar shows dark pool percentage (DP) and average trade size category. High dark pool routing with large average trade sizes points to institutional accumulation or distribution happening off the public exchanges. Small average trade sizes confirm retail-driven volume.

Before entering a trade, check Nydar's retail/institutional split. A stock with 80% institutional ownership will react to earnings and analyst upgrades more than social media hype. A stock with 70% retail ownership is more susceptible to momentum swings and short squeezes.

When Nydar's retail percentage is very high and sentiment is unanimously bullish, the trade may be overcrowded. If everyone who wants to buy has already bought, there are fewer marginal buyers left to push the price higher. Watch Nydar's sentiment indicator for shifts as potential reversal warnings.

These are estimates. Nydar's retail vs institutional percentages are derived from ownership data, trade size distributions, and dark pool routing patterns. They are not exact measurements. Treat Nydar's estimates as directional indicators, not precise figures.

Ownership data lags. Institutional ownership is typically reported quarterly through regulatory filings. Nydar's estimates may not reflect very recent changes in positioning. Nydar's intraday trade size analysis is more current but less precise.

High retail ownership is not inherently bullish or bearish. Some of the best-performing stocks of the past decade have had significant retail followings. Some of the worst blow-ups have too. Nydar's retail/institutional split tells you who is in the trade, not where the trade is going.
