Crypto Terms for Beginners
Nydar's 200-term glossary and this guide decode crypto jargon — HODL, rug pull, gas fees, DeFi, and every other term you'll encounter when trading 200+ crypto pairs.

Quick Navigation
Blockchain Fundamentals
These are the building blocks. Nydar covers over 200 crypto pairs with real-time data, and understanding these terms will help everything else make sense.
Blockchain
A digital ledger that records transactions across many computers. Once data is recorded, it can't be changed - making it secure and transparent. Think of it as a shared Google Doc that nobody can secretly edit.
Full definition →Bitcoin (BTC)
The original cryptocurrency, created in 2009. Digital money that works without banks or governments. Limited to 21 million coins ever, which is why some see it as "digital gold."
Ethereum (ETH)
A blockchain that does more than just payments. It runs "smart contracts" - programs that automatically execute when conditions are met. Most DeFi apps and NFTs run on Ethereum.
Altcoin
Any cryptocurrency that isn't Bitcoin. Ethereum, Solana, Cardano, Dogecoin - all altcoins. Short for "alternative coin."
Full definition →Token vs Coin
Coin: Has its own blockchain (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana). Token: Built on someone else's blockchain (most DeFi tokens run on Ethereum). The terms are often used interchangeably, but technically they're different.
Smart Contract
Code that runs on a blockchain and executes automatically when conditions are met. "If X happens, do Y." No middleman needed. Powers everything from DeFi lending to NFT sales.
Gas Fees
Transaction fees paid to use a blockchain. On Ethereum, you pay gas in ETH. Fees spike when the network is busy. Layer 2 solutions (Arbitrum, Optimism) offer lower fees.

Exchange
Where you buy and sell crypto. Centralised (CEX): Company holds your crypto (like a bank). Decentralised (DEX): You keep control, trade directly from your wallet.
Wallet
Software or hardware that stores your crypto. Hot wallet: Connected to internet (convenient, less secure). Cold wallet: Offline device (secure, less convenient). Your wallet has a public address (like an email) and private key (like a password - never share it).
Market Cap
Total value of all coins in circulation. Price × Supply = Market Cap. Bitcoin's market cap is around $1 trillion. A $1 billion market cap token is considered mid-cap; under $100 million is small-cap (higher risk).
Liquidity
How easily you can buy or sell without moving the price. Bitcoin and Ethereum have high liquidity. Small altcoins have low liquidity - your buy order might spike the price, and selling might crash it.
Full definition →Leverage
Borrowing money to trade bigger positions. 10x leverage means $100 controls $1,000. Gains are amplified - but so are losses. Get liquidated (lose everything) if the trade moves against you too much.
Full definition →Staking
Locking up crypto to help secure a blockchain network. In return, you earn rewards (like interest). Ethereum, Solana, and many others offer staking. Typical returns: 3-10% APY.
Full definition →DeFi & Web3
Decentralised Finance (DeFi) recreates banking services without banks. Web3 is the vision of a decentralised internet.
DeFi (Decentralised Finance)
Financial services built on blockchain - lending, borrowing, trading, insurance - without banks or brokers. You connect your wallet and interact directly with smart contracts. Examples: Uniswap, Aave, Compound.
Full definition →DEX (Decentralised Exchange)
Trade crypto without a middleman. Your wallet connects directly to the exchange. No account needed, no KYC, you keep control of your funds. Examples: Uniswap, SushiSwap, PancakeSwap.
Liquidity Pool
Crypto locked in a smart contract that enables trading on DEXs. People deposit tokens and earn fees when others trade. The foundation of DeFi - but comes with risks like impermanent loss.
Yield Farming
Moving crypto between DeFi protocols to maximise returns. Provide liquidity, earn fees + token rewards. Can be lucrative but risky - smart contract bugs, rug pulls, and volatile rewards.
Full definition →NFT (Non-Fungible Token)
A unique digital asset on the blockchain. Unlike Bitcoin (where each coin is identical), each NFT is one-of-a-kind. Used for digital art, collectibles, gaming items, and more. Ownership is provable on-chain.
Full definition →Web3
The next evolution of the internet - decentralised and user-owned. Instead of logging into Facebook with your email, you connect with your crypto wallet. Your identity and data belong to you, not corporations.
Full definition →DAO (Decentralised Autonomous Organisation)
An organisation run by code and community votes, not executives. Token holders vote on decisions. Treasury managed by smart contracts. Think of it as a company where shareholders directly vote on everything.
Crypto Slang
Crypto Twitter and Discord have their own vocabulary. Here's what people actually mean:
HODL
Hold On for Dear Life. Originally a typo, now means holding through volatility instead of panic selling.
Diamond Hands
Holding through big drops without selling. Strong conviction, won't let volatility shake you out.
Paper Hands
Selling at the first sign of trouble. Weak hands, easily scared out of positions.
WAGMI
"We're All Gonna Make It." Optimism and community solidarity. Used during bullish times.
NGMI
"Not Gonna Make It." Used to mock bad decisions or express pessimism. The opposite of WAGMI.
Ape / Aping
Buying impulsively without research. "I aped into that token." High risk, sometimes high reward.
Degen
Short for "degenerate." Someone who takes extreme risks - high leverage, new tokens, memecoins. Self-deprecating term.
Rekt
"Wrecked." Lost a lot of money. "I got rekt on that trade." Usually from leverage or rug pulls.
FOMO
Fear Of Missing Out. Buying because price is pumping and you don't want to miss gains. Often leads to buying tops.
FUD
Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt. Negative news or rumours spread to scare people into selling. "That's just FUD."
DYOR
Do Your Own Research. Don't trust what others say - verify it yourself. Standard disclaimer after sharing any opinion.
NFA
Not Financial Advice. Legal disclaimer. "I'm buying more ETH. NFA." Means don't blame me if you lose money.
Whale
Someone with a lot of crypto who can move markets. Whale wallets are tracked for signals.
Shill
Aggressively promoting a token, usually because you own it. "He's just shilling his bags."
Security Terms
Crypto is full of scams. Knowing these terms can save you from losing everything.
Rug Pull
A scam where developers abandon a project and run off with investors' money. They drain liquidity or dump their tokens, crashing the price to zero. Common with new DeFi projects and memecoins.
Full definition →Phishing
Fake websites or messages that trick you into revealing your seed phrase or private keys. Always double-check URLs. Never enter your seed phrase anywhere except your wallet software.
Seed Phrase / Recovery Phrase
12-24 words that can restore your entire wallet. Anyone with these words can steal all your crypto. Write them down on paper (not digitally). Never share them. No legitimate service will ever ask for them.
Private Key
The cryptographic key that proves you own your crypto and lets you send it. Like a password, but can never be changed. If someone gets it, they can empty your wallet.
Not Your Keys, Not Your Coins
If your crypto is on an exchange, you don't truly own it - the exchange does. They could get hacked, go bankrupt, or freeze your account. Self-custody (your own wallet) means you control your keys.
Stay Safe
- • Never share your seed phrase or private keys with anyone
- • Bookmark official sites instead of clicking links
- • Start with small amounts when trying new protocols
- • If returns seem too good to be true, they usually are
- • Use hardware wallets for large amounts
Market Metrics
ATH / ATL
ATH: All-Time High - the highest price ever. ATL: All-Time Low - the lowest price ever. "Bitcoin hit a new ATH!" means new record high.
TVL (Total Value Locked)
How much crypto is deposited in a DeFi protocol. Higher TVL = more trust and usage. A key metric for comparing DeFi platforms.
APY / APR
APR: Annual Percentage Rate (simple interest). APY: Annual Percentage Yield (compound interest). A staking pool might offer "12% APY" - your returns if you stake for a year with compounding.
Dominance
Bitcoin's market cap as a percentage of total crypto market cap. High dominance (60%+) often means altcoins are weak. Low dominance (40%) means altcoin season - money flowing into smaller coins.
Tokenomics
The economics of a token: total supply, distribution, inflation rate, burn mechanisms, vesting schedules. Good tokenomics = sustainable. Bad tokenomics = insiders dump on you.
