Risk Analytics & VaR

Nydar's risk analytics calculate Value at Risk using 3 methods — parametric, historical simulation, and Monte Carlo with 10,000 simulated price paths — at the 95% and 99% confidence levels. Nydar stress tests portfolios against the 2008 financial crisis (-56.8%), the March 2020 COVID crash (-33.9% in 23 days), and the May 2021 crypto correction (-53.4%), then measures risk-adjusted performance with Sharpe, Sortino, and Calmar ratios. The VaR framework follows Philippe Jorion's Value at Risk (McGraw-Hill, 3rd ed.).

Why Risk Analytics Matter

Protect Your Capital

Nydar calculates your maximum potential loss before it happens. VaR at the 95% confidence level means there is only a 5% chance of losing more than the stated amount in a single day. The framework follows Philippe Jorion’s Value at Risk (McGraw-Hill, 3rd ed.), the standard reference for portfolio risk measurement.

Optimise Position Sizing

Nydar’s correlation matrix shows pairwise relationships between all positions. A portfolio with 5 holdings all above 0.85 correlation has effectively 1 position. Nydar flags concentration risk so traders size positions based on true diversification, not asset count.

Survive Black Swans

Nydar stress tests portfolios against 3 real crash scenarios: the 2008 financial crisis (-56.8%), the COVID crash (-33.9% in 23 days), and the May 2021 crypto correction (-53.4%). Each scenario shows the estimated dollar impact on current positions.

Manual Risk Tracking vs. Nydar

Most traders track P&L but not actual risk. Nydar calculates the metrics institutional desks use to manage exposure.

Complete Risk Toolkit

Nydar provides the same risk analytics used by institutional desks — VaR, stress testing, performance ratios, and correlation analysis — across crypto, stocks, and forex

Value at Risk (VaR)

Nydar calculates VaR using 3 methods — parametric, historical simulation, and Monte Carlo (10,000 paths) — at the 95% and 99% confidence levels over 1-day and 5-day horizons

  • Parametric VaR assuming normal returns
  • Historical simulation using actual return distribution
  • Monte Carlo VaR with 10,000 simulated price paths
  • 1-day and 5-day time horizons
  • 95% and 99% confidence intervals

Stress Testing

Nydar replays 3 historical crash scenarios against the current portfolio: 2008 financial crisis (-56.8%), March 2020 COVID crash (-33.9% in 23 days), and the May 2021 crypto correction (-53.4%)

  • 2008 financial crisis scenario (-56.8% S&P 500)
  • COVID-19 crash scenario (-33.9% in 23 trading days)
  • May 2021 crypto correction (-53.4% in 6 weeks)
  • Custom scenario builder with configurable drawdowns
  • Dollar-impact estimate on current positions

Performance Ratios

Nydar calculates Sharpe ratio (excess return per unit of total risk), Sortino ratio (downside risk only), and Calmar ratio (return vs max drawdown) for a complete risk-adjusted picture

  • Sharpe ratio — excess return / total volatility
  • Sortino ratio — excess return / downside deviation
  • Calmar ratio — annualised return / max drawdown
  • Risk-free rate configurable
  • Rolling and cumulative calculations

Drawdown Analysis

Nydar tracks maximum drawdown, current drawdown depth, and recovery time so traders see exactly how far the portfolio has fallen from its peak and how long recoveries take

  • Maximum drawdown (peak-to-trough)
  • Current drawdown from high-water mark
  • Recovery time in days
  • Drawdown duration tracking
  • Historical drawdown chart overlay

Monte Carlo Simulation

Nydar runs 10,000 simulated price paths using historical volatility and correlation structure to project the full distribution of portfolio outcomes, not just a single point estimate

  • 10,000 simulation paths per run
  • Probability distributions at configurable horizons
  • Best/worst case scenario bounds
  • 95% and 99% confidence intervals
  • Captures fat-tail risk parametric models miss

Correlation Matrix

Nydar displays pairwise correlation between all portfolio positions — a portfolio with 5 positions all above 0.85 correlation has effectively 1 position in terms of diversification

  • Pairwise correlation for all holdings
  • Concentration risk identification
  • Cross-asset correlation (crypto, stocks, forex)
  • Rolling correlation windows
  • Diversification score

What the Numbers Mean

Every metric in Nydar’s risk analytics has a specific definition and threshold. Here is what each number tells you.

Value at Risk (VaR)

Nydar calculates VaR using 3 methods. Parametric VaR assumes normal returns — fast but misses fat tails. Historical VaR uses actual return distributions, capturing the real shape of crypto and stock returns. Monte Carlo VaR runs 10,000 simulated paths using historical volatility and correlation. For a $100,000 portfolio with 15% annualised volatility, the 1-day 95% VaR is approximately $2,470. Framework: Jorion, Value at Risk (McGraw-Hill, 3rd ed.).

Performance Ratios

Nydar computes 3 ratios. Sharpe = excess return / total volatility (above 1.0 is good, above 2.0 is excellent). Sortino = excess return / downside deviation only (ignores upside volatility, so a better measure when returns are skewed). Calmar = annualised return / max drawdown (penalises large peak-to-trough drops). Together, these 3 ratios give a more complete risk-adjusted picture than any single metric.

Sharpe ratio originated with William Sharpe (1966). Sortino ratio refines it by measuring only downside risk.

Stress Testing

Nydar replays historical crash scenarios against current positions. The 2008 financial crisis produced a -56.8% S&P 500 peak-to-trough drop. The March 2020 COVID crash hit -33.9% in just 23 trading days. The May 2021 crypto correction saw Bitcoin fall -53.4% in 6 weeks. Each scenario shows the estimated dollar impact on the trader’s current positions.

Traders can also build custom scenarios with configurable drawdown assumptions.

Correlation Matrix

Nydar displays pairwise correlation between all portfolio positions. Correlation ranges from -1.0 (perfect inverse) to +1.0 (perfect positive). A portfolio with 5 positions all above 0.85 correlation has effectively 1 position in terms of diversification. Nydar flags high-correlation clusters and computes cross-asset relationships across crypto, stocks, and forex to identify true diversification.

Markowitz's Modern Portfolio Theory (1952) demonstrated that diversification reduces risk only when asset correlations are below 1.0.

Risk Analytics FAQ

Common questions about Nydar’s portfolio risk management tools

Value at Risk estimates the maximum loss a portfolio could experience over a given period at a given confidence level. Nydar calculates VaR using 3 methods: parametric (assumes normal returns), historical simulation (uses actual return distribution to capture fat tails), and Monte Carlo (runs 10,000 simulated price paths). Each method reports at the 95% and 99% confidence levels over 1-day and 5-day horizons. For a $100,000 portfolio with 15% annualised volatility, the 1-day 95% VaR is approximately $2,470. The VaR framework follows Philippe Jorion's Value at Risk (McGraw-Hill, 3rd edition).
