Options Flow Analysis

Nydar's options flow analysis tracks unusual activity, sweep detection, Vol/OI ratio flagging (flags contracts above 2.0), IV percentile, Greeks, and max pain across US equity options. Research by Easley, O'Hara & Srinivas (Journal of Finance, 1998) showed informed traders prefer options markets — Nydar surfaces that institutional positioning in real time.

Why Track Options Flow?

Spot Institutional Moves

Nydar flags contracts with Vol/OI above 2.0 and sweep executions across multiple exchanges, surfacing institutional positioning before price moves.

Gauge Market Sentiment

Nydar tracks put/call ratios with 52-week historical context. Readings below 0.7 signal bullish sentiment; above 1.0 signals bearish positioning.

Find Volatility Edges

Nydar ranks IV against 252 trading days. IV percentile above 90% means options are expensive (sell premium); below 10% means they are cheap (buy premium).

How Nydar’s Options Flow Analysis Works

Every options trade leaves a footprint. Big trades — the kind that move markets — leave bigger ones. Nydar scans US equity options in real time, flags contracts with Vol/OI above 2.0, tags every trade as bullish or bearish by execution price, and detects sweep orders across multiple exchanges.

  • Unusual volume vs open interest flagging
  • Bid/ask execution tagging for directional bias
  • Sweep detection across multiple exchanges
  • Block trade identification for institutional moves
  • Real-time Greeks calculations on every contract

What the Numbers Mean

Every metric in Nydar's options flow toolkit has a specific definition and threshold. Here is what each number tells you.

Unusual Volume (Vol/OI Ratio)

Today's volume divided by open interest for a specific contract. A ratio above 1.0 means more contracts traded today than exist in open positions — a strong signal of new money entering. Nydar flags contracts above 2.0 as unusual. Research by Easley, O'Hara & Srinivas (Journal of Finance, 1998) showed options markets lead equities in incorporating private information.

Normal: <0.5Elevated: 0.5-2.0Unusual: 2.0+

Put/Call Ratio

Total put volume divided by total call volume. Below 0.7 = bullish sentiment (more calls). Above 1.0 = bearish sentiment (more puts). Nydar tracks both volume-based and OI-based ratios with 52-week historical context. Extreme readings often mark turning points.

Both volume-based and open-interest-based ratios available. OI-based is slower but more reliable for positioning.

IV Percentile & IV Rank

IV Percentile — what % of the last 252 trading days had lower IV than today. 90th percentile = IV is higher than 90% of the past year. Nydar calculates this for every tracked contract.

IV Rank — where current IV sits between its 52-week high and low. 80% = near the top of its range. High IV favours selling strategies; low IV favours buying. The volatility risk premium averages 2-4 points for liquid equities (Carr & Wu, Review of Financial Studies, 2009).

Max Pain

The strike price where the maximum number of options (calls + puts) expire worthless — costing option holders the most money. Price tends to gravitate toward max pain as expiration approaches because market makers hedge their positions. Nydar calculates max pain for every expiration date.

For weekly options on high-volume names, OI often concentrates within 2-3 strikes. Most useful in the final 48 hours before expiry.

Sweep Detection

A sweep is when a trader hits multiple exchanges simultaneously to fill a large order fast — paying extra to get filled now rather than waiting. Nydar distinguishes single-exchange fills from true intermarket sweeps (ISO orders) that hit multiple venues simultaneously.

Sweeps are tagged separately from regular block trades. Multiple sweeps on the same ticker in a short window amplify the signal.

Options Greeks

Nydar calculates all 4 Greeks using the Black-Scholes-Merton framework (Black & Scholes, Journal of Political Economy, 1973). Delta — option movement per $1 stock move. Gamma — delta acceleration. Theta — daily time decay. Vega — IV sensitivity.

All Greeks update in real time for every contract on Nydar. Delta also approximates the probability of expiring in-the-money.

Options Flow FAQ

Common questions about Nydar’s options flow analysis tools

Unusual options volume is measured by the Volume/Open Interest (Vol/OI) ratio. A ratio above 1.0 means more contracts traded today than exist in open positions — a strong signal of new money entering. Nydar flags contracts with Vol/OI above 2.0 as unusual. Research by Easley, O'Hara, and Srinivas (Journal of Finance, 1998) demonstrated that options markets lead equity markets in incorporating private information — unusual options flow is often the first visible evidence of informed positioning.
