Footprint Chart Guide
Nydar's footprint charts show the volume battle at every tick inside a candle — bid/ask volume, delta, and absorption patterns that regular candlesticks hide. Combined with Nydar's 105 technical indicators and real-time Level 2 data, footprint analysis reveals what most traders never see.
What is a Footprint Chart?
A footprint chart (also called a cluster chart) expands each candlestick to reveal the exact volume traded at every individual price level. Each row represents a price tick, showing bid volume (aggressive selling) on the left and ask volume (aggressive buying) on the right.
Anatomy of a Footprint Candle
POC (4,207): Highest total volume — the price where most agreement occurred.
Top (4,210): 12 bid, 0 ask — only sellers at the high. This is an unfinished auction.
Bottom (4,204): 0 bid, 30 ask — only buyers at the low. Another unfinished auction.
4,208-4,207: Ask volume far exceeds bid — buy imbalances. Aggressive buyers dominating.
Regular candle: Open 4,205, High 4,210, Low 4,204, Close 4,208, Volume 772. That is all you see. Footprint: You see exactly where the 772 contracts traded, which side was aggressive at each level, and where the battle was won or lost.
Reading Imbalances
An imbalance occurs when the volume on one side significantly exceeds the other at adjacent price levels. The standard threshold is a 3:1 ratio — three times more aggressive volume on one side than the opposing side at the neighbouring tick.
Buy Imbalance
Ask volume at a level is 3x or more than the bid volume at the level below. Aggressive buyers are overwhelming passive sellers.
120 ask at 4,206 vs 35 bid at 4,205 = 3.4:1 ratio
Sell Imbalance
Bid volume at a level is 3x or more than the ask volume at the level above. Aggressive sellers are overwhelming passive buyers.
150 bid at 4,210 vs 30 ask at 4,211 = 5:1 ratio
Stacked Imbalances: The Power Signal
When three or more consecutive price levels show imbalances in the same direction, it creates a stacked imbalance. This is one of the strongest signals in order flow — it indicates committed institutional buying or selling across multiple price levels.
Three consecutive buy imbalances = stacked. This zone often becomes supporton pullbacks because institutional buyers committed heavily here.
Unfinished Auctions
An unfinished auction occurs when a candle's high or low has volume on only one side — the opposing side never showed up. This creates a price level that the market is statistically likely to revisit.
Unfinished Auction at the High
Buyers pushed to 4,210 but no sellers appeared. The auction at this level is incomplete. Price is likely to revisit 4,210 to allow sellers to participate.
Unfinished Auction at the Low
Sellers pushed to 4,200 but no buyers appeared. This creates a magnet — price often returns to complete the auction.
How to trade it: Mark unfinished auctions from the prior session. When price approaches, expect a test of that level. If the auction completes (opposing volume finally appears), the level's pull is satisfied and price can move on.
Spotting Absorption on Footprint Charts
Absorption is easiest to identify on Nydar's footprint charts because you can see the actual volume being absorbed at each price level.
Absorption Pattern: What to Look For
Massive volume concentrated at one level. One price tick has 3-5x the volume of surrounding levels.
Lopsided but price does not move. Ask volume is huge (aggressive buying) but the candle does not close above the level — a passive seller is soaking it up.
Multi-candle persistence. The same level shows extreme volume across 2-3 consecutive candles — the absorber is committed.
Example: Selling Absorbed at Support
5-min candle at key support 29,500:
850 contracts of aggressive selling hit the bid at 29,500, but price held. Someone absorbed 850 contracts of selling at this level. Despite the massive selling pressure, the candle closed at 29,501. The absorber is a large passive buyer defending 29,500. The trade: long at 29,502 with a stop at 29,498, targeting 29,600.
Footprint Reading Patterns
Initiative Activity
Large aggressive volume that moves price in a direction. The aggressor is initiating a new move — they are not reacting to someone else.
Signature: Buy imbalances at the top of the candle (buyers pushing into new territory, not just defending).
Responsive Activity
Volume that appears in reaction to price reaching a specific level. The trader was waiting for this price and responded when it arrived.
Signature: Sell imbalances appearing only at a known resistance level. Buyers stepped aside, sellers stepped in at a pre-determined price.
Exhaustion
Volume that surges at the end of a move, often at a candle extreme, followed by an immediate reversal. The last push is the aggressive side's final effort.
Signature: Massive buy volume at the candle high with a long upper wick. The buying climaxed and price immediately rejected — a blow-off top in miniature.
Migration of the POC
Track where the Point of Control sits across consecutive candles. A migrating POC reveals the direction of value acceptance.
Bullish: POC migrating higher across 3+ candles — buyers are establishing value at progressively higher prices. Bearish: POC migrating lower — sellers gaining ground.
Common Footprint Mistakes
Using Too Large a Timeframe
Footprint charts lose their value on higher timeframes (30m+) because the volume gets aggregated over too long a period. Stick to 1-5 minute candles for meaningful footprint analysis.
Treating a Single Imbalance as a Signal
One isolated imbalance is noise. Look for stacked imbalances (3+) or imbalances that align with key levels, CVD confirmation, or order book depth.
Forgetting About the Bigger Picture
A buy imbalance inside a strong downtrend may just be a brief bounce, not a reversal. Always consider the broader trend before acting on footprint signals.
Information Overload
Footprint charts display a lot of data. Focus on one or two patterns first (imbalances + POC) before trying to read everything at once. Mastery comes from narrowing focus, not widening it.
Key Takeaways
- Footprint charts show the internal battle inside each candle — bid vs ask volume at every price tick.
- Stacked imbalances (3+ consecutive) indicate institutional commitment and often mark the start of moves.
- The POC is the fairest price — use it as a reference for mean reversion and support/resistance.
- Unfinished auctions create price magnets — the market tends to revisit levels where one side never participated.
- Absorption is most visible on footprint charts — massive one-sided volume at a level with no price movement.
